Ensuring GMO-free agriculture as a prerequisite for realizing Commissioner Hansen’s vision for Europe’s farming and food systems

In the European Commission’s vision for the future of agriculture presented on February 19th, organic farming plays a central role as a model for combining environmental ambition with economic success. Commissioner Hansen has emphasized the importance of young farmers and generational renewal, acknowledging the organic sector as a best-practice example in building resilient and sustainable food systems. Organic farming is not only an ecological requirement but also a viable economic path for Europe’s agricultural future.

However, this vision can only be realized if the integrity of organic farming is protected. Genetic engineering, including New Genomic Techniques (NGTs), is fundamentally incompatible with organic principles and threatens coexistence through potential contamination and market distortion. German youth organisations have taken a clear stance against the planned deregulation of NGTs. Read their position here: Resolution on New Genomic Techniques

If the EU is serious about promoting organic farming as a cornerstone of agricultural policy, it must also ensure a clear legal framework that guarantees the continued right to GMO-free production. Supporting organic youth means safeguarding their ability to farm according to these principles – today and in the future.
